What Should Parents Wear for a Newborn Session? A Simple Guide to Choosing Outfits for the Whole Family

One of the questions I hear most often from parents preparing for their newborn session is, “What should we wear?”

And I completely understand why! Choosing outfits for an entire family can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re already preparing for a new baby.

The good news? It doesn’t have to be complicated.

When planning outfits for a newborn photography session, I always recommend keeping things simple, soft, neutral, and timeless. My newborn photography style is very light and natural, with a focus on those sweet little details that make your baby unique. Because of that, I love when the entire family dresses in a similar neutral color palette.

Think whites, creams, tans, soft beige, and other light neutral tones.

The goal isn’t to create perfectly matching outfits. Instead, we want everyone’s clothing to work together so the images feel seamless and cohesive while allowing your new baby to remain the focus of the gallery.

My Favorite Color Palette: Light & Neutral

For my newborn sessions, I tend to gravitate toward an all-white or all-neutral look.

This might mean:

  • Mom in a soft cream or white dress
  • Dad in a white, cream, or tan shirt
  • Big brother or sister in a simple neutral outfit
  • Baby wrapped in a soft cream or white
  • Bare little toes, tiny hands, and all those beautiful newborn details

You may have heard photographers say that everyone in a family shouldn’t wear the same color. And while I completely agree with that advice for many types of family sessions, newborn sessions with me are a little different.

With a newborn session, I actually love when everyone is dressed similarly.

Why? Because we want that sweet new baby to stand out the most.

When the entire family is dressed in light, neutral tones, the eye naturally goes toward the smallest person in the room. It also creates a beautiful, seamless look throughout your gallery without clothing becoming the main focus.

So don’t be afraid of everyone wearing white!

For newborn sessions, matching isn’t a bad thing. In fact, it’s one of my favorite looks.

What Should Mom Wear?

Mom is often the first person I think about when planning family outfits. After all, you’ve just brought a brand-new baby into the world, and this session is about celebrating you and your growing family, too.

I love soft, simple dresses for moms. A flowing cream or white dress photographs beautifully and gives the images movement without distracting from your baby. You can also absolutely wear a simple top with pants, jeans, or another comfortable option if that’s more your style.

Some of my favorite options include:

  • Soft white or cream dresses
  • Neutral maxi or midi dresses
  • Simple knit dresses
  • White or cream tops with neutral bottoms
  • Soft fabrics with subtle texture
  • Bare feet for a relaxed, natural feel

Most importantly, choose something you feel comfortable in. You don’t need to wear something fancy just because it’s a professional photography session. You have just had a baby, and I want you to feel like yourself.

And here’s another reason not to stress over every little detail of your outfit: I photograph a lot of parent portraits from the waist up.

We’re often focusing on the way you’re holding your baby, baby’s tiny face tucked against you, those little hands wrapped around your finger, or the connection between you and your partner. Because of that, your bottoms aren’t nearly as important as your top or dress.

So if you have the perfect cream sweater but aren’t sure what pants to wear with it, don’t overthink it! Choose something comfortable that coordinates with the rest of your family’s outfits.

The same goes for shoes. They often won’t even make it into the photographs.

What Should Dad Wear?

Dad’s outfit can be even simpler.

A classic white, cream, beige, or tan shirt paired with neutral pants is perfect.

Think:

  • White button-down
  • Cream or beige sweater
  • Simple neutral T-shirt
  • Tan or beige pants
  • Light denim
  • Khaki-style pants

Again, I wouldn’t spend too much time worrying about the bottoms. Many of my favorite parent portraits are photographed waist-up, so the top is really where I’d put your focus.

There is no need for complicated layers or accessories. In fact, I generally prefer a clean and simple look for newborn sessions.

The focus should be on your family and the connection between you, not on what everyone is wearing.

What Should Siblings Wear?

Siblings are such an important part of newborn sessions, and I love including them!

For older brothers and sisters, I recommend following the same general color palette as Mom and Dad.

If your family is wearing white and cream, keep their outfit in that same family of colors.

Some simple ideas include:

For girls:

  • Cream or white dresses
  • Neutral rompers
  • Simple skirts
  • Knit dresses
  • Bare feet

For boys:

  • White or cream shirts
  • Tan pants or shorts
  • Neutral overalls
  • Simple knit tops
  • Light denim

And when it comes to siblings, barefoot is PERFECTION.

There is something so sweet and timeless about those little bare feet next to their new baby brother or sister. It keeps the images feeling natural and relaxed and adds to that cozy newborn feel I love so much.

You also don’t need to worry too much about their shoes. They often won’t be visible in the portraits, and when they are, I’m much more interested in those sweet little toes anyway!

What About Baby & Sibling Photos?

When we’re photographing siblings together, I will typically have baby fully wrapped.

There are a couple of reasons I love doing this.

First, it keeps baby extra cozy and comfortable while we’re moving through sibling portraits. And second, when you’re photographing multiple children — especially a newborn and a toddler — things can get a little unpredictable!

A fully wrapped baby gives us a little more flexibility while still keeping those beautiful newborn details visible.

It also creates a really timeless look when paired with simple, neutral sibling outfits.

We can focus on the sweet interaction between your children without worrying about baby’s arms and legs being in different directions or needing to constantly adjust a tiny outfit.

And don’t worry — wrapped doesn’t mean boring! We can still incorporate beautiful textures, soft neutral wraps, and different simple poses to create variety throughout your gallery.

Most importantly, baby’s comfort always comes first.

Yes, Your Children Can Wear the Same Color!

This is one of those situations where I give families permission to break the traditional family photography rules.

For a typical family session, I might recommend avoiding putting everyone in the exact same color.

But for newborn photography, I love it.

If Mom, Dad, and your children are all wearing shades of white and cream, it creates that beautiful “all whites” look that I love.

The simplicity keeps the attention on your baby.

And when you’re looking back at these photographs years from now, you’re much less likely to notice a particular clothing trend. Instead, you’ll see your family, your new baby, and those tiny details that you never want to forget.

Keep Patterns to a Minimum

When choosing outfits, I recommend avoiding busy patterns whenever possible.

Small, subtle patterns can sometimes work, but large florals, stripes, plaid, bold prints, and busy graphics can quickly become distracting.

Newborn sessions are already filled with lots of sweet little details — tiny fingers, eyelashes, toes, baby’s lips, and all those adorable newborn features.

We don’t want clothing competing with them.

When in doubt, solid colors are always a safe choice.

Please Skip the Logos

I also recommend avoiding clothing with large logos, graphics, or words.

A small, subtle logo isn’t the end of the world, but large branding can draw the eye away from the people in the photograph.

Instead, look for simple pieces without obvious graphics.

This is especially important for sibling outfits. A cute shirt may seem perfect in person, but if it has a giant character or logo across the front, that’s likely what you’ll notice first in the photograph.

Add Interest With Texture

Just because we’re keeping the colors simple doesn’t mean your outfits have to look boring!

One of my favorite ways to add visual interest to a neutral wardrobe is through texture.

Think:

  • Knits
  • Linen
  • Muslin
  • Ribbed fabrics
  • Waffle textures
  • Soft cotton
  • Lace
  • Subtle embroidery

Textures photograph beautifully and add dimension to your images without creating the distraction that a busy pattern can.

You can have Mom in a textured cream dress, Dad in a simple white shirt, and your children in soft knits or cotton pieces — all within the same neutral color family.

The result is simple, timeless, and beautiful.

You Don’t Need Lots of Layers

For newborn sessions, I generally don’t recommend overcomplicating your outfit with lots of layers.

A simple outfit often photographs better than an outfit with a jacket, cardigan, scarf, belt, and multiple accessories.

Newborn sessions tend to have a very soft, intimate feel, and I love allowing the simplicity of the images to speak for itself.

So if you’re wondering whether you need to add another layer or accessory, you probably don’t!

Simple is beautiful.

What About Shoes?

For newborn sessions, shoes are definitely not something I would stress over.

Many of my favorite family and parent images are photographed from the waist up, so shoes often don’t even make an appearance.

And when we do photograph everyone from head to toe, I often love the look of bare feet — especially for little ones.

For siblings, keeping them barefoot is honestly one of my favorite looks. Those tiny bare feet add such a sweet, innocent feeling to newborn photographs.

If you’d rather wear shoes, that’s completely fine! Just keep them simple and neutral if they’ll be visible.

But if you’re wondering whether you need to buy a special pair of shoes for your newborn session?

Absolutely not.

What If I Don’t Own Anything in These Colors?

Don’t panic!

You don’t need to go out and buy an entirely new wardrobe for your newborn session.

Start with what you already have.

Look through your closet for white, cream, beige, tan, soft brown, or other light neutral pieces. You may be surprised by how many options you already have.

If you’re still struggling, send me a few outfit options! I’m always happy to help you decide what will photograph best together.

The Most Important Thing: Choose Something Comfortable

As beautiful as your outfits are, the most important thing is that you feel comfortable in them.

Newborn sessions involve a lot of sitting, cuddling, holding your baby, and moving around. You don’t want to spend the entire session worrying about whether your dress is riding up or whether your pants are uncomfortable.

Choose clothing that allows you to move naturally and comfortably.

Your baby doesn’t care what you’re wearing — and honestly, neither do I!

I’m much more interested in capturing the way you look at your baby, the way your older child reaches for their new sibling, Dad’s hands wrapped around that tiny body, and all of those little moments that happen naturally during your session.

What Should Baby Wear?

And finally, let’s talk about the most important outfit of all!

Baby.

For my newborn sessions, I typically keep baby’s wardrobe very simple as well. Soft wraps, neutral colors, and timeless pieces allow those tiny newborn features to take center stage.

Baby will often be fully wrapped for family and sibling portraits, especially when we are working with multiple children. This keeps baby cozy and comfortable while allowing us to focus on those sweet connections between siblings and parents.

We can still capture plenty of those tiny newborn details throughout the session — little fingers, toes, eyelashes, lips, and all the things you’ll want to remember.

I love whites, creams, and soft neutrals because they pair beautifully with the rest of the family and create a cohesive gallery.

You don’t need a closet full of newborn outfits.

In fact, some of my favorite images are the simplest ones — a tiny baby wrapped in a soft neutral, surrounded by the people who already love them more than anything.

My Simple Newborn Outfit Formula

If you’re still feeling overwhelmed, here’s my easiest recommendation:

Mom: White or cream
Dad: White, cream, tan, or beige
Siblings: White, cream, tan, or beige
Baby: White, cream, or soft neutral
Patterns: Minimal
Logos: None or very subtle
Texture: Yes!
Layers: Keep them simple
Bottoms: Don’t overthink them — many parent images are photographed waist-up
Shoes: Optional — barefoot is beautiful!
Baby for sibling portraits: Typically wrapped for comfort and ease
Overall look: Light, neutral, timeless

And remember — you don’t have to perfectly match.

You simply want your outfits to live within the same soft, neutral color palette.

When everyone is dressed in complementary light tones, your final gallery will feel cohesive from image to image, while your new baby remains the star of the show.

Still Not Sure What to Wear?

Don’t stress about it!

Choosing outfits can feel like one more thing to check off your list when you’re already preparing for a new baby. I’m always happy to help you decide what will work best for your family and your session.

My goal isn’t to create a perfectly styled family. It’s to create photographs that feel soft, natural, timeless, and full of connection — photographs that bring you right back to those tiny newborn days long after they’ve passed.

Because those little hands, tiny toes, sleepy stretches, and the way your older children look at their new sibling?

Those are the details you’ll want to remember forever.
