One of the most common questions I get from expecting parents is:
“When should we book our newborn photographer?”
My answer is simple: as early as you can!
You don’t have to know your baby’s exact arrival date. In fact, we know babies don’t exactly follow our calendars. Instead, when you book your newborn session, I reserve a spot for you around your due date and we adjust from there once baby arrives.
There are a few reasons I recommend booking before your baby is born, especially if you’re hoping for those sweet, sleepy, curly newborn photographs.
Unlike many types of photography, newborn sessions require a little more flexibility.
Babies don’t always arrive on their due dates. Sessions can take several hours. Some babies need extra time to settle, feed, or snuggle. And because newborn photography is so hands-on and baby-led, I intentionally leave space in my calendar rather than filling every available appointment.
I currently take on a maximum of five newborn sessions each month.
This is a very intentional decision.
You may see photographers who take on significantly more newborns each month, and that’s completely okay! Every photographer runs their business differently.
For me, keeping my newborn calendar small allows me to give each family the time and attention they deserve.
It also means I can keep some flexibility in my schedule.
Your baby may come early.
Your baby may come late.
You may have an induction scheduled. You may have a planned C-section. Or you may simply be waiting for your little one to decide when they’re ready to make their grand entrance.
That’s why I don’t schedule your newborn session based solely on your due date.
Instead, we use your due date as our starting point and communicate once baby arrives so we can choose the best available date for your session.
By only accepting a handful of newborns each month, I’m able to leave room for that flexibility.
And honestly, babies are much better at making the schedule than we are.
Another big reason I limit the number of newborn sessions I take each month is so I can keep up with your galleries.
I don’t want to photograph your baby and then have you waiting months to see your images.
You have just welcomed this tiny person into your family, and I know how quickly those first few weeks disappear.
I want you to be able to enjoy your photographs while your baby is still so tiny.
Keeping my newborn calendar intentionally limited gives me the time I need not only to photograph your session, but also to carefully select and edit your images afterward.
That means I can maintain a quick and consistent turnaround time without sacrificing the quality and care that goes into your gallery.
This one is a little more personal.
I have a family of my own.
I have my own babies to raise, school schedules to keep up with, family plans, weekends I want to enjoy, and a life outside of my business.
And while I absolutely love what I do, I also really love being present for my kids.
Photography is a huge part of my life, but it isn’t the only part of my life.
I’ve learned over the years that I don’t want to build a business that requires me to miss the things that matter most to me.
I want to be able to photograph your baby’s first days and be there for my own children’s childhood.
I want to have the flexibility to take my kids somewhere on a Saturday.
I want to enjoy a family vacation without constantly thinking about how many galleries are waiting for me when I get home.
I want to be present.
And I’ve learned that creating those boundaries in my business actually makes me a better photographer.
Earlier in my photography career, I took on a lot.
There were seasons where I booked as much as I possibly could because it felt like the right thing to do. More sessions meant more clients, more galleries, and more income.
But eventually, something happened that I think a lot of creative entrepreneurs can relate to:
I burned out.
And when you’re a photographer, burnout doesn’t just mean you’re tired.
It can affect your creativity.
The excitement you once had for picking up your camera can start to feel different. Editing becomes overwhelming. Creating starts to feel like another task on an endless to-do list.
And I never want the families I photograph to receive a burned-out version of me.
You deserve a photographer who is excited to see your baby.
You deserve someone who has the creative energy to notice the tiny details.
The little fingers wrapped around yours.
The way your toddler looks at their new sibling.
The tiny stretch after a good nap.
Mom’s hand resting against baby’s back.
Dad holding that impossibly small newborn close.
Those moments require me to slow down and actually see what is happening in front of my camera.
Limiting myself to five newborns a month isn’t about making my calendar look full.
It’s about creating a business that I can sustain.
It’s about giving each family the experience and attention I want them to have.
It’s about having enough space in my schedule when babies don’t arrive according to plan.
It’s about giving myself the time to edit your images carefully and get your gallery back to you quickly.
And it’s about protecting the creativity that made me fall in love with photography in the first place.
I don’t want to photograph hundreds of newborns a year just to say that I did.
I want to remember the families I photograph.
I want to have the time to connect with you.
I want to create images that feel like you.
And I want to still be excited to pick up my camera for the next family.
If you’re expecting a baby and know you’d like newborn photographs, I recommend reaching out during your pregnancy rather than waiting until after baby arrives.
You don’t need to have everything figured out.
You don’t need to know exactly when your baby will be born.
And you certainly don’t need to have their nursery finished or their entire wardrobe picked out.
We simply get your session on the calendar around your due date, and then we’ll adjust once your little one arrives.
Because I only accept up to five newborn sessions each month, my availability can fill well before the month actually arrives.
Booking early gives us the best chance of finding a date that works for your family while still allowing the flexibility we need for baby’s arrival.
Those first few weeks are a blur.
The sleepy cuddles.
The tiny fingers.
The wrinkly feet.
The little noises.
The way they fit perfectly against your chest.
Before you know it, that brand-new baby is stretching out, waking up a little more, and growing into their next stage.
That’s why I love newborn photography so much.
It’s not just about taking pretty pictures.
It’s about preserving a tiny chapter of your family’s story that you can never recreate.
So if you’re expecting and dreaming of those soft, timeless newborn photographs, don’t wait until baby arrives to reach out.
Let’s get you on the calendar, leave plenty of room for baby to make their own grand entrance, and then slow down for a few hours to remember just how tiny they really were.
Because these days?
They go by far too fast.
