One of the most common questions I get from parents before their session is: “What if my baby doesn’t sleep?” And honestly… it’s such a valid concern.
You picture those dreamy, sleepy, curled-up newborn photos and then your baby decides it’s wide awake and ready to take it all in. I promise you, you are not alone in that worry.
But here’s the truth: your session will still be beautiful, no matter what your baby decides to do.
First things first, my newborn sessions here in Longview, Washington are completely baby-led and slow paced. That means we take breaks when needed, we follow your baby’s cues, and there is never any pressure to force poses or rush the process.
Some babies come in sleepy and stay that way the whole time… and some don’t. Both are 100% normal.
I’m actually writing this while sharing images from a past session with a baby who was wide awake, super calm, and had serious FOMO (fear of missing out) the entire time. This little one did not want to miss a single thing happening in the studio and honestly, it made for the sweetest gallery.
So if you’re worried your baby might be the same… you’re in the right place.
If your baby decides sleep just isn’t on the agenda, we simply adjust. I always go into sessions with a flexible plan so we can create beautiful images either way.
When baby is awake, wrapping is our best friend. Wrapped poses help baby feel secure and calm, and they photograph beautifully whether baby is asleep or wide awake. You’ll still get those soft, cozy images you love just with a slightly different approach.
Some of my favorite images actually come from awake babies. Those little eyes looking right at the camera (or at you!) create such a strong, emotional connection. It tells a different kind of story and it’s just as special.
That past “FOMO baby”? We got the most incredible eye contact and those images feel so full of personality.
If baby is awake or a little unsettled, we slow things down and focus on the little things! Tiny fingers, flaky toes, wispy hair, eyelashes… all those details that change way too fast. These are often the images parents end up loving the most.
I’ve worked with so many newborns here in Longview, Washington, and every single one is different. There is no “perfect” baby behavior for a session.
Your baby doesn’t need to sleep the whole time.
Your baby doesn’t need to be perfectly calm.
Your baby just needs to be your baby.
That’s where the magic is.
I bring patience, experience, and a calm environment into every session so we can make the most of whatever your baby gives us that day. Whether they sleep the entire time or stay wide-eyed and curious, we will create a gallery full of meaningful, beautiful images.
And sometimes… those wide awake, FOMO-filled moments end up being your absolute favorites.
If you’re planning a newborn session in Longview, Washington and still have questions, I’m always here to chat and help you feel fully prepared. Your experience should feel relaxed, supported, and genuinely enjoyable from start to finish.
